The Extraordinary Man

I was thinking about some things I learned a few years ago, back to February of 2005 to be exact. It was then I had the opportunity to hear a particular message from Rick Godwin. Rick's message was about taking risks and how important it is to be willing to take risks in your life. There was one statement he made that hit me so hard, it still impacts me today. He said, "you can change the world...start with yourself, by becoming extraordinary". One thing I have learned over the years is it is very difficult to become something unless you understand what it is.

Kanye, Pinocchio and Perspective

My wife and I were recently having a discussion on perspective. Why does it seem like we are always striving for something just out of reach? Why are we looking to do the next thing, travel to the next place, buy the next gadget? What is it about the human condition that feeds the rat race mentality? Is it the marketing society we live in? " If you have this new dish detergent, your life will be complete and clean" Is it the MTV effect? We see all the movie stars and the rock stars and want our own minute of fame. This discussion reminded me of the bonus track on the new Kanye West cd entitled "Pinocchio's story" which he performed in Singapore. I love the transparency of this track, as Kanye talks about being on the other side. He should have everything. Money, cars, talent, women....and yet he wants what he can't have. Check out the lyrics and the video below.

Gone

A few students and myself are journeying through the book of Luke. Each week we talk through a chapter of the Gospel. Yesterday we tackled Luke 3. This particular chapter is largely consumed with Jesus' genealogy, which follows his family's bloodline all the way back to Adam. A couple of the students asked why Luke included what, at first glance, appears to be an arbitrary and incomplete family tree. I read the genealogy aloud (stumbling over many of the names) and about halfway through the litany I began to realize something--most of these names are unfamiliar to me. I started wonder about what their lives might have been like, whether they were well known during their time, whether they were people who would have been recognized by Theophilus (Luke's intended audience). Sadly, these forgotten men are only names to me. Today, I'm still thinking about Luke's genealogy in connection to my own life. The reality is that each of us will one day take our last breath. Death is a foregone conclusion for every human being. The question has never been, "Will we taste death?", but rather, "What will death taste like?"

I want to ask you a question.

It’s a black and white question: Are you living the life that God is calling you to live? Yes or no? Yes means that you are pursuing God’s clear plan for your life no matter the cost, the sacrifice, the pain. You’re pursuing Him for the future glory of His ultimate plan.
