How the Cross saved Christmas

As a romantic, I am always thinking of ideas to be creative with my wife, Abby, yet as an idealist and with a propensity for passivity, ninety percent of those ideas never come to fruition. But, I was not going let our first Christmas together slip by without a “you’re-theonly- one-for-me” moment. There is always a slight fear in me when I step into the spontaneous, unknown world of romance. “Will she like it?” “What if it flops?” “Is it selfish?” “What if we get in bad moods and ruin it?” “Couldn’t I be more productive with this time?” “Wouldn’t it be better to go straight to bed, than waste good sleep time?” Abby is much more detail-oriented than I am. When I come up with an idea, she lovingly questions how it is really going to function. She takes care of the details of things she owns quite well, and gets upset when they are not cared for. Abby generally adopts new ideas much more quickly, if they have been primed beforehand. But this romantic idea was simple and genius, and I believed it would start a spicy, yearly Christmas tradition in our home. It would go off without a hitch! Or so I thought....

In the midst of the moment

The lights are aglow and the festiveness has almost reached its’ pinnacle. It is finally here. Christmas has come around again and as we exchange our gifts and spend time with family and friends, we are given another opportunity to enjoy that which God has blessed each one of us with; that blessing is life. Whether rich or poor, we must be thankful for the fact that we are alive and have these moments to share with people who are a huge part of our lives. For years, Christmas has been a time of giving and receiving, for which I had a deep love for both aspects. I love shopping for people and trying to pick out something that would bring a smile to their face, if only for a moment. It was a time for trying to reach out to them with what I had blessed with and attempt to show them the depth of the feelings that I held for them. The receiving part was great as well, as my mother, my father, and my sister always did things for me that I didn’t even dream were possible. This year, we have faced tough economic times.
