Webb’s “Stockholm” Misguided, but a Remarkable Journey Nonetheless

“Intentionally inorganic” is the phrase Derek Webb uses to describe his latest effort, Stockholm Syndrome, and while his signature acoustic sound may have been replaced with electro-beats and computer-synthesized bells and whistles, the allure of Webb, with his bold, often shocking statements, is still firmly in place. In fact, its one shocking statement in particular [...]

Job Hunting Essentials: Cover Letter Guide

With the unemployment rate reaching 10%, it’s a pretty safe bet that someone reading this blog is either out of work or going to be soon. It’s unfortunate, but true. The number of resumes I’ve received in the last two months probably outnumbers the amount I’ve gotten in the last two years! If you’re one of those individuals who is currently on the job hunt, you have some stiff competition. There are going to be more—and better— qualified applicants seeking the same occupation you are, so it’s more important than ever before to position yourself to be the best candidate available. In addition, since it’s a buyer’s market, employers are in a position to be as picky as they’ve ever been. So what can you do to increase your odds of winning the job lottery? For starters, your cover letter must be impeccable. If you don’t get called for an interview, you have zero chance of getting the job!

Fight Like Jesus II

But early on Mark had run scared. We don’t know details, but something happened to set him off. Fear of being mocked or worse? Fear of losing the security he felt from familiar surroundings? Fear of not knowing how to fight to win? Whatever, Mark went AWOL. We piece together Mark’s story from Acts in the New Testament, a reference in a letter from Paul, the Gospel that bears his name, and from Church tradition. By the end, Mark makes a remarkable recovery and lives and dies, living up to his name - “Warrior.” As a young man Mark joined Paul and Barnabas when the community of Jesus-followers in Antioch commissioned then to plant churches around the Mediterranean. It proved dangerous adventure that Mark couldn’t endure. Shortly after the mission began Mark turned tail and headed home. Only he could explain why.

Portable USB Record Player

Vinyl is making a comeback. Great sound and vintage feel but a record player just isn't convenient. Until now. Take a look at this super simple design by designer Charles Pyott. You load the record to the lower spindle element, lock it into place and push power. It then releases the tonearm and spins up the record. You can hook it up through your computer’s USB port for sound (and power), or use the USB power adapter with standard stereo jack output. Take a look at the diagrams below to get a closer look.

Men of God Spotlight: JR Towles

He calls the shots. For most of us, we have always wanted to get to the place where we call the shots in life. No boss. No set schedule. There is no one to whom we have to answer. He calls the shots in a different way. He calls the game. From behind the plate, he signals to the pitcher what pitch should be thrown next, and then he sets up a target for the pitcher in the exact location where the pitch should be thrown. It is not an easy job. On the field, he makes a hundred or more decisions throughout one game, trying to baffle the hitter so the Houston Astros can win the game. JR Towles has learned how to game plan for Major League hitters and he calls the shots for the pitcher during the game. In his life, though, he has learned that it is God who is calling the shots and he walks humbly down the trail that God has cut for him. I caught up with JR in Kissimmee, FL this season during Spring Training. He stood there intent on talking about a faith that has changed his life in more than one way.

Fight Like Jesus

Say something, for God’s sake! When Jesus shows up things happen. When he shows up he uses words and the world is recreated. Words are Jesus’ weapon of choice and his tool of design. He could hurl lightning bolts, or split mountains with his fist, or with a wave of his hand toss the armies of the planet into the sea. Instead, Jesus says things. For words, when they are the right words, spoken by the right messenger, are enough. At the start of his ministry Jesus explained his mission in words that Isaiah the Prophet had borrowed from God:“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” Luke 4:17-19.
