White Heart Lane – One Big Small Group

Traveling across London is always a joyous occasion. Hundreds of fed up, commuters trying to get to or home from work. No-one smiles in London, no-one. Until of course they have something to be apart of.It's not hard to spot other spurs fans (for Americans, a North London soccer team) on the way to a game, in fact you can spot them a mile off. And not only because they are vandalizing something, but because the fans wear the kit. Sometimes (and I would never suggest doing this) the whole kit. I once saw someone sitting watching a game wearing his football boots. Weird. Maybe he thought he'd get a game? So when you finally sit down for the first time at the lane, after seeing countless spurs shirts, flags and scarfs traveling it seems, with you, right across London, streams of white and blue cover the entire stadium. And what a sight it is. There is such a feeling of unity and community which everyone wants to be apart of. And those around that aren't apart of that wish they'd bought that cheap scarf from that dodgy tent store on the way to the ground. My point being, everyone wants to be apart of something. Everyone loves being apart of a community. They just might not use that wording. We need to remember this as we hit our communities with the gospel. Why are we so unexpectant of the gospel changing lives in our communities. How often do we hear the phrases, "they could never be a christian" or "she would never come to church," we make decisions for people before even giving them a chance to come along.

Mentoring 201

OK. So we’ve tackled what I consider the worst aspect of mentoring, and now we can move on to some of the good stuff! In today’s entry, we’ll discuss why it’s so important to your success, and I’m sure we’ll have a word or two from our sponsor as well. (Jesus is our Sponsor, so there will definitely be some input from Him.) First of all, why mentor? I listed a few reasons in my last blog, but there are plenty of others I can add to that list. Probably the most important reason is that it’s the only way to increase time. There are only 24 hours in a day, and only so much one person can accomplish in those 24 hours. However, by taking someone under your wing, and teaching him or her to duplicate your efforts, you can effectively multiply your productivity, thus multiplying your time! This principle is outlined in the gospels. Jesus mentored His disciples, and then sent them out to “make disciples of all nations, and [teach] them to obey everything [He] commanded” (Matt. 28:19-20). Jesus Himself did not go into all the world. In His human form, this would have been physically impossible, and we know from a number of examples that He honored His human limitations (see Matt. 4:2). Nor could His disciples have gone into all the world by themselves! They needed to duplicate their efforts as well. Two thousand years later, we’re still trying to get into all the world! Even Paul—who pretty effectively evangelized most of the civilized world—only managed to visit only one small geographic area around the Mediterranean Sea.

NBA standings and boobs

Where is the limit? I understand that when I visit certain sites that I should expect to be targeted to by images of scantly clad women. I expect to see advertisements for lovelines when I am watching late night tv, but where do these media companies draw the line. It is Saturday afternoon, and as I am browsing the internet just checking on the latest NBA standings, I get this.

How will we be humbled?

How will we be humbled?

It will happen. We may not know how or when, but the fact still remains that it will happen. There are a few times in life where something is inevitable, and this happens to be one of those times. It is inevitable that we die. It is inevitable that tax season will come around again. It is even more inevitable that the nation that we live in will be humbled. As we watch the news, read the reports on the internet and in newspapers, we see a society barreling towards hell, not giving any notice to the commands of God or the wrath that God can pour out at any second.

Are you truly thankful for your wife?

Are you truly thankful for your wife?

Many men praise their wives from time to time but how selfish is that praise? Are you thankful for your wife because of all the ways that she blesses you? Are you thankful for her beauty; her home cooked meals; her funny jokes or those special times alone. It is important to be grateful for all her blessings but is that really a spirit of thankfulness? The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "...give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." It does not say be thankful in all good and comfortable circumstances. If we apply this to our marriages then it means be thankful for our wives at all times. Are you thankful for your wife when she is sick? ... When she is unattractive? ...when she is depressed? ... When she is disabled? ...When she is struggling with mental illness? ...When she does not want you to touch her? ...When she is struggling with her weight?

What is Love? Baby, Don’t Hurt Me

Yes. I just titled this article of mine after a 90's club hit by the singer Haddaway that can also be found in the SNL movie "A Night At The Roxbury" and the sketches that spawned it entitled, "The Roxbury Guys". All [slightly obscure] cultural references aside, the question "what is love?" is one that still lingers and haunts in the musings of middle-school kids and aged adults alike. Over the decades, people have had interesting, insightful and often humorous things to say about love...

Book Review: It’s Not Fair – Finding Hope When Times Are Tough by Wayne Mack

More often than we'd like, to many of life's maladies we can only look on as flabbergasted spectators. However, the familiar adage ‘Good sailors are not made by calm seas' is very applicable in today's volatile and unpredictable economy, where it has never been more apparent just what or in whom our trust is really anchored. Thus, as others prosper, seemingly unaffected by the shadow of the believer's own stockpile of surmounting hardships, it is altogether quite natural to respond with ‘it's not fair.' Dr. Wayne Mack's new book ‘It's Not Fair! Finding Hope When Times Are Tough', coauthored with Deborah Howard, is, "designed to teach a proper, biblical theology, and ...throw off the ‘it's not fair' mentality."
