How the Cross saved Christmas

How the Cross saved Christmas

As a romantic, I am always thinking of ideas to be creative with my wife, Abby, yet as an idealist and with a propensity for passivity, ninety percent of those ideas never come to fruition. But, I was not going let our first Christmas together slip by without a “you’re-theonly- one-for-me” moment. There is always a slight fear in me when I step into the spontaneous, unknown world of romance. “Will she like it?” “What if it flops?” “Is it selfish?” “What if we get in bad moods and ruin it?” “Couldn’t I be more productive with this time?” “Wouldn’t it be better to go straight to bed, than waste good sleep time?” Abby is much more detail-oriented than I am. When I come up with an idea, she lovingly questions how it is really going to function. She takes care of the details of things she owns quite well, and gets upset when they are not cared for. Abby generally adopts new ideas much more quickly, if they have been primed beforehand. But this romantic idea was simple and genius, and I believed it would start a spicy, yearly Christmas tradition in our home. It would go off without a hitch! Or so I thought....

In the midst of the moment

In the midst of the moment

The lights are aglow and the festiveness has almost reached its’ pinnacle. It is finally here. Christmas has come around again and as we exchange our gifts and spend time with family and friends, we are given another opportunity to enjoy that which God has blessed each one of us with; that blessing is life. Whether rich or poor, we must be thankful for the fact that we are alive and have these moments to share with people who are a huge part of our lives. For years, Christmas has been a time of giving and receiving, for which I had a deep love for both aspects. I love shopping for people and trying to pick out something that would bring a smile to their face, if only for a moment. It was a time for trying to reach out to them with what I had blessed with and attempt to show them the depth of the feelings that I held for them. The receiving part was great as well, as my mother, my father, and my sister always did things for me that I didn’t even dream were possible. This year, we have faced tough economic times. As a newlywed...

It is about the Heart, not the Hemline.

It is about the Heart, not the Hemline.

There is a pastor on the West Coast who tells the tale of taking his wife clothes shopping. As the story goes, upon looking in their closet one day he came to the realization that all of his wife's outfits were older than their five children and stylistically challenged. Knowing that his wife would buy practical things for the home and special gifts for her children instead of purchasing anything new for herself, the man took it upon himself to set the stage for a material makeover. He decided his plan of attack would be taking his wife to dinner and then, after setting himself up on a chair in a clothing store fitting room, demanding that his lovely bride find all new clothes and spend lots and lots of money on herself buying them. Now at this point all the girls reading this are saying, "Wow, where do I find such a prince?" and all the guys are wondering, "What the heck is this dude doing? Do you know how many chicken wings he could have eaten with that cash!" Most people are probably in one of those two groups. But there is also a third group. This is the Don't-Spend-God's-Resources-on-Clothes group. Be honest, because I know you're out there. And what is ringing in your heads are the words of the Apostle Paul to his young apprentice Timothy. "...women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works." You're beside yourself that a so called "pastor" would so blatantly disregard the clear NT teaching and purchase costly attire for his wife. Am I right?

Churched – Book Review

I remember, as a sophomore, having this hilarious conversation with a friend about sex. It was one of those grey winter afternoons and we were parked outside of the Christian high school the both of us attended. Part of what made it funny was the fact we were both virgins so conversations like this were sort of an indirect testing ground for guys to ascertain if the thoughts fueled on by your raging hormones were either normal or an indication of incurable sexual deviancy. Being good Baptists, of course, our entire talk was framed within the context of our assumed marriages. “On my honeymoon I’m going to burry my head right between my wife’s breasts and go crazy,” my friend said cupping a set of imaginary double D’s that he jiggled slightly to enhance the realism. Then we broke out into a fit of laughter as he lowered his head and illustrated the “motor boat” technique recently made famous by Vince Vaughn in the film Wedding Crashers. I don’t know how the discussion started or anything beyond that moment, but I do know “doing the nasty” was not a subject you could talk about within the walls our school.

The Mo and the Fizzle

OK, if you’re Snoop Dog, you might have some idea what that title means, but if you’re anyone else, you’re probably scratching your head. So let me explain. The mo is short for momentum, and the fizzle is what happens when momentum dies out. The fo shizzle is rap language for for sure, and really has nothing to do with today’s blizzle (blog). It’s just there to catch your attention and get you to read!

Cool Website: thebricktestament.com – Lego Bible

Thebricktestament.com displays illustrated bible stories using legos. From the story of Job to Jesus walking on water, there are over 30 biblical stories shown on the site. I still am not sure of the intentions of thebricktestament as many of the stories seem to be of a mocking nature and involve racy humor. Regardless, the creators have obviously spent a lot of time putting these together and often use clever ways to tell the story using familiar lego pieces. The lego stories are also published in books sold on the website.

Book Review of The Shack-Is it Biblical?

Book Review of The Shack-Is it Biblical?

Young's intentions are good. He wants to introduce readers to a loving God who was willing to sacrifice his own Son to save us from our sins. But all heresies begin with misconstruing the nature of God. From Jehovah's Witnesses to Mormonism to even Islam, they all get it wrong when it comes to understanding the God of Scripture. Young joins their company. Part of the problem arises because his story is confused and inconsistent. I don't think he sets out to mislead, but he himself is misled, either by himself or others. He wants desperately to show us the God of love as found in Scripture (1 John 4:8), but he ignores the other side, the God of utter holiness (Isaiah 6:1-5) and, ultimately, the final Judge (Revelation 20:11-15). Any presentation of God that shows only one side of His nature is wrong. In an effort to counter a false view of God as only the judging avenger of wrath, we must not go the opposite direction and present Him only as a loving, indulgent parent who never judges sin. Both extremes are false in that they present an incomplete picture of God as He shows himself to us in Scripture. By emphasizing only one part of God’s nature, The Shack actually leads readers astray with regard to God’s attitude towards sin. Papa tells Mack, “I don’t need to punish people for sin. Sin is its own punishment, devouring from the inside. It’s not my purpose to punish it; it’s my joy to cure it.”

Plugged Into Joy

Plugged Into Joy

Most people, including Christians, are searching unsuccessfully for happiness. I see so many miserable Christians who have no qualms about making their misery evident and available to anyone who wants in. After all, misery loves company! What about that attracts the unbeliever to Christ? Why would anyone want to follow Christ when all Christianity appears to offer is the same bowl of despair with ten scoops of commandments mixed in! What we often fail to realize is that we are not guaranteed happiness here on earth. Jesus says, “in this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). But He finishes by saying, “take heart! I have overcome the world.” The phrase, take heart, means to have courage or be bold. In other words, stay the course and walk toward the “kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world” (Matt. 25:34).
